Lori Peirce led a great workshop, using beautiful red-berried holly, fragrant fir, blue-berried cedar, golden green cypress. and fresh pine in making a bobeche-inspired design which rests atop a candle stick, giving the candle a lovely, festive skirt of greenery and color.

Sam Florance offered a mini-demonstration on making birch bark trees for a non-traditional centerpiece, adding rose hips, old man's beard, and various woodland mosses to create a natural setting for the tree.

Carol Rogers provided a gorgeous entry way design with beautiful proportions for an outdoor entry setting. Featuring varieties of greenery and abundant red fire berries, Carol's arrangement would create the perfect welcome.

The VTC greenhouse classroom made a great venue (we could get messy)--and where else but a college campus could a young man wander into a meeting full of ladies (who could be his mother), strike up a good-natured conversation without batting an eye, and leave with a bag full of tulip bulbs for his mother's Christmas gift? Our terrific treasurer (and chair of the bulb sale), Ellen Shepheard, is always on the ball!

Eggnog and delicious sweet treats by Lori and Mary Lou Konecsny rounded out the afternoon. And, of course, we always leave a space in great shape, no matter how the pine needles might fly. Many thanks to Nancy Tabor for managing that part of the program.

Everyone went home with some great ideas and a beautiful candle arrangement (or two!). Deck the halls!

Most garden club programs are open to the public. We're at the end of our gardening year now, but please view the programs for this year, and come back to check out our new program year in April.

Garden Design Program Nov. 8

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Lynn has been creating dried flower arrangements for about 25 years. She grows and dries her own dried flowers at her home in Brookfield. She sells her gorgeous designs at local farmers’ markets, the Chandler Christmas Bazaar, and many other venues. There will be a business meeting at 1 pm, followed by Lynn’s presentation at 2 pm, all at the Old Town Hall in downtown Brookfield.

The Hall is not heated, so bring along a sweater.

We will also have a Make-it and Take-It Workshop after the presentation, when you can make a small basket of dried flowers. Lynn will provide the dried flower material, foam, small baskets, and any floral tape or wire we may need. You need to sign up for the workshop, so that Lynn can bring enough material. The fee for the workshop is $15, and you can take your basket home. The
Queen Anne's Lace, Black-eyed Susans, Culver's Root, pink clover, bedstraw and many other flowers make the fields and roadsides a lovely place to walk. Note in the Valley Reporter that there are also some "thugs" out there that we should be pulling. The purple loosestrife and wild honeysuckle are ready to send their seeds all over the area. If you would take a plastic bag and collect the seed heads and berries and throw them in the trash you would be helping to keep the native plants from being overrun by these invasives."

"The Secret Gardens of Randolph Village" Garden Tour 2011

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Change in a garden can be gradual as in the maturation of woody plants, like rhododendrons, or it can be sudden as in the felling of a large oak by lightning. But like it or not, gardens change from hour to hour, day to day, season to season, from one year to another, and in the case of my garden, over a period of many years. Although this process is ongoing and inevitable, change is one of the least talked about aspects of gardening and one of the most fascinating. For gardeners, time is the fourth dimension. How we respond to changes that occur due to the passage of time depends on our temperaments and on our gardening styles, but respond we must. Plants wax and wane. Some are long-lived; some are not. The decisions we make as we go along are what gives each garden its special character.
Sydney brings to her lectures all the skills gained in more than twenty years of teaching drama. To her writing she brings the joy, enthusiasm, and experience of a life-long gardener. For her work, she received the Connecticut Horticultural Society’s Gustav A. L. Melquist Award in 2002; the New England Wild Flower Society Kathryn S. Taylor Award in 2005, the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut’s Bronze Medal in 2006, and in 2010 the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Award of Excellence. Sydney has written seven books on gardening as well as articles for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden handbooks in the 21st Century Gardening Series. Most of us have read her articles in Fine Gardening Magazine and other publications.

In our second presentation, “Designing with Native Plants,” Charlotte Albers of Paintbox Garden, a landscape design business based in Shelburne, VT, presents new combinations that include great examples of naturalistic design including her long border. Charlotte studied botany and plant taxonomy at the U.S. National Arboretum, holds certificates in Horticulture and Landscape Design from the USDA Graduate School in Washington, D.C. and completed the Master Gardener program through Virginia Cooperative Extension. Through workshops and classes she continues to explore the art of the garden and promotes sustainable landscapes as a volunteer habitat steward with the National Wildlife Federation and as a member of the Town of Shelburne Natural Resources & Conservation committee.
She has been an education consultant to The American Horticultural Society and The Massachusetts Horticultural Society, worked in public horticulture as an environmental educator and has been a contributing writer to The American Gardener magazine, People Places & Plants, Vermont Life, Publishers Weekly and others. She currently writes for The Burlington Free Press.

Native plants, particularly xeric species from the Great Plains and northern western intermountain regions, are of particular interest to our third speaker, Liz Krieg. As seen in this presentation “Rock Gardens For All,” these plants and other small north east regional plants are quite useful. Covering cultural needs, selection and use of rock, plant choices, garden creation and care of rock gardens; this show will give anybody with a pile of rocks true inspiration to “dig in!”
Liz Krieg is a degreed horticulturist, a Vermont Certified Horticulturist, an Accredited Organic Land Care Professional, a Vermont Master Gardener, and an instructor for New England Wild Flower Society. She formerly taught at Vermont Technical College for the Landscape Design and Ornamental Horticulture program. She is a garden writer, educator, and popular lecturer. Liz is an industry expert, known as an ardent plants-woman with a passion for plant research. She is a plant colorist that enjoys leaving swaths of floral beauty in her wake. Ever the plant connoisseur, she grows high quality, unusual and hard to find plants at her business Rising Sun Greenhouses and Landscape Company located in Bethel, Vermont.

The spring symposium There, the students worked with coffee farmers trying to form a cooperative to sell organic coffee.

“Our work focused on how farmers can organize their farms and crops to attract a wide variety of pollinators,” says Richmond-Hall. “Native as well as European honeybees help to increase coffee pollination and production,” critical aspects of making the crop profitable. Richmond-Hall’s presentation of the students’ work with the coffee farmers will include “lots of great photos, a good story and [internet] links” to tell about the trip and its results.

“This evening program is a departure from our regular schedule of daytime programming,” notes Carol Rogers, president of Randolph Garden Club. “It’s also a departure from our focus on local gardening topics to a more global outlook on sustainable practices. We hope an evening program will attract community members who can’t attend daytime programs, and that a cross-cultural view of sustainable practices in another community may shed light on challenges that face Vermont farmers as well as home gardeners.” Randolph Garden club sponsors a scholarship to a student in the Landscaping and Ornamental Horticulture program which also includes the study of organic and sustainable practices.

To locate Room 128 of Green Hall, Rogers suggests using the door to the left of the VTC greenhouse entrance. The meeting room is the first room on the left. To learn more, contact Carol Rogers, 276-3072 or crogers@vtc.edu, or visit online at randolphgardenclub.org.

This year at NER

Pictured at NER with FGCV president, Stephanie Hockensmith, are Carol Rogers, who is finishing a terrific two-year tenure as club president, and Lori Peirce, who has done a great job this past year as vice president, and who will soon step into Carol's big shoes! And did I say it was fun? Our own Ellen Shepheard, Bonny Willett, and Millie Chase sold paperwhite and amaryllis bulbs to benefit RGC's Vermont Tech Landscape and Horticulture Scholarship. The public is invited to attend this free, “make it, take it” workshop where participants will create their own enclosed mini-ecosystem.

The workshop will include a history of terrariums. Says Peirce, “terrariums were originally called Wardian cases, and were often wonderful little gazebos made of iron or wood and glass.” You can actually make them from panes of glass or buy them at garden shops, she notes. “They’re wonderful because they can contain a whole, self-sustaining environment. The trick is getting the right plants in them.”

Plants--as well as charcoal, sand, and moss--will be provided for the workshop, but participants may also bring their own plants if they wish. The main requirement is that they be small specimens. Suitable plants might include african violets, miniature orchids, dwarf ferns or very small ferns from the woods, peperomias, pileas, or small herbs. The plants can be a seedlings of a larger plant, small begonias, or rootings of coleus. Let the size of your glass container be the guide. Plants should have ample space.

Attendees should bring their own clear glass container such as a brandy snifter, fish bowl, berry bowl, kitchen storage jar, vase with some depth, candy bowl, footed jar--even a wine glass would work for a smaller terrarium. Clear glass containers may be lidded, domed, or open.

For more information, contact Jackie Wilder, 276-3959. To view all garden club events, go online at randolphgardenclub.org. The show, which is co-sponsored by Chandler Center for the Arts, is open to the public for viewing and to exhibit. Public hours of the show will be from 1 - 5 pm Saturday.

“This year’s theme is an exciting one, sure to please lovers of art and flowers,” says club president Carol Rogers. There will be eleven classes, each inspired by a famous painting. The paintings and classes in the design division include Degas, Ballet Rehearsal On Stage (a line-mass arrangement); William Hogarth, The Shrimp Girl, (an arrangement using a Hogarth Curve); Andrew Wyeth, Christina’s World, (an arrangement using grasses); Van Gogh, Sunflowers, (a mass arrangement of brightly colored flowers); Piet Mondrian, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue (a parallel design); Zhao Hao, Chinese Scroll, Flowers after XuXi, (an arrangement in the oriental style); Claude Monet, Water Lilies, Evening Effect (a design involving water); and Henri Matisse, The Dinner Table (a place setting with an individual flower arrangement, no silverware).

In the horticulture division, the paintings and classes include Georgia O’Keeffe, Red Poppy (a specimen flower, but not necessarily a red poppy); Paul Cezanne, Potted Plants (a potted plant, flowering); and Hema Rana, Foliage (a potted plant, non-flowering).

“The key word is inspiration,” says Rogers. “Floral designs for the show should be inspired by the painting, but the description of the class should be the main guideline and what judges will be looking for as they choose a winning entry in each class.”

The design inspiration can come from the painting’s colors, theme, content, era, or style suggests Rogers. “Å detail from the painting might be the inspiration.” The expression of the class description could be through the choice of flowers, container, colors or form.

Entry information and show guidelines will be available at local florists and garden centers. Small replicas of the paintings that inspire each class, as well as general entry rules, may also be viewed online at the garden club’s website, randolphgardenclub.org.

Randolph Garden Club members and non-members are encouraged to exhibit in the flower show. Only one entry per class is allowed, but entries in all classes are encouraged. Entries will be received between 8:15 am and 9:45 am on Saturday, July 31st.

Exhibitors are asked to list the plant material in their arrangement, using the common names of the plants, and botanical names if possible. Flower Show Committee members will be available to help entrants with botanical names of plant material. Please bring arrangements early if you desire assistance with names.

Only fresh or dried materials may be used. No artificial flowers, fruit or foliage will be allowed. Accessories are allowed, but must not dominate the arrangement except for class 8 (the place setting). No invasive flowers or plants may be used.

Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and Honorable Mention in each class. "Best of Show" ribbons will be given by the judges to the best design and horticulture entries. A "People's Choice" award will be given for the design chosen by the viewers as their favorite. Entries may not be removed before 5:00 pm on July 31st but must be removed before 6:00 pm.

Please call Carol Rogers, 276-3072, or email crogers@vtc.edu for more information.

Randolph Garden Club Receives Landscaping Grant for Habitat

Randolph Garden Club has received a Habitat for Humanity landscaping grant from the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont in the amount of $325. The grant will be used to plant shrubs and an ornamental tree at the Habitat house currently under construction on Friend Street in Randolph.

The landscape plan is being developed by Nancy Nicholas, a garden club member who is completing a horticulture and landscaping degree at Vermont Technical College.

Garden club members who are on the Habitat for Humanity committee, Habitat for Humanity volunteers, and the partner family will install the plants and keep them watered throughout the summer and fall.

The grant will allow a beginning level of landscaping. The container is also important in oriental design. It should be in proportion to the size of the arrangement and should complement the colors of the foliage or floral material.

“Floral arranging is an ongoing learning experience,” notes Hamblin. “Just have fun and learn--that’s how you evolve as a designer. I’ve learned that way myself as opposed to formal instruction.”

Hamblin has been making flower arrangements since age 13. She designed arrangements for her own company, Simply Beautiful Flowers of Cape Cod. She continues to create arrangements for functions, events, and weddings as time allows.

Floral material and oasis foam will be provided for a $5 materials fee. Participants should bring a container and clippers or a knife to cut stems. Those who wish to bring their own floral material should cut flowers or foliage early in the morning of the workshop or in the evening the day before. Put material immediately into a container of luke-warm water and place in a cool, dark location for several hours or overnight to condition them to take on water efficiently. Participants who prefer may also wish to bring their own pin holder.

Contact Karen Hamblin, 508-737-4341, for more information. To view upcoming garden club events, go online at randolphgardenclub.org.

Plant Sale Coming Up! Rogers is a Master Gardener and chair of the Gifford Houseplant Committee, in which capacity she cares for or oversees the care of all the houseplants in the public areas of Gifford Medical Center, including the Menig wing.

Rogers’ discussion on houseplants will center on tending to the needs of your houseplants—light, water, fertilizer, humidity, and potting media. She will also discuss special treatment of houseplants in spring and summer, and several houseplants that are very easy to grow. Members and guests are encouraged to bring in a favorite houseplant for display.

Garden Club programs are open to the public, so anyone interested in houseplants, is invited to come. The program should begin around 1 pm.

“Please put this date on your calendars,” Rogers said. “It will be a great time to see old and new faces, greet the spring, and find out all about the wonderful plans for the 2010 garden club season!”

The Randolph Garden Club meets the second Tuesday of each month, starting in April. Rubbing alcohol will do the trick as well.

Now, if only someone would breed a scent-free paperwhite.

Boxing Around - Our Great Holiday Workshop

'Twas three weeks before Christmas, when all through the hall
Workshop goers were designing, having a ball...

Club members and guests shared clippers, an impromptu carol sing, helpful advice, and stems of boxwood. After a while, you didn't know where your pile of boxwood stopped and your neighbor's started, but nobody seemed to mind. Gay and Bonny gave us the basics and then turned us loose to make our trees. Amidst terrific company, with yummy refreshments to keep our energy high, some beautiful trees arose from those piles of boxwood. It was a great event! See more of the trees, thanks to these pictures taken by Rocky Mockus.

Paperwhites are up!

This vintage graniteware pan is loaded with large round gravel so that it can't possibly tip over, no matter how tall these paperwhites get. The paperwhites are receiving the 'whiskey' treatment, so they'll be more compact as they grow (see the previous post for explanation of the 'whiskey treatment.')

They were planted about four or five days ago. Having been left a bit too long in the garage before planting, they had sprouted in strange, crooked ways. They've straightened up now and seem to be well on their way. The whiskey was added to the water today.

Now, they just need to be moved to a cooler spot so they don't grow too quickly. The mosses tucked in around the bulbs were gathered the same day the bulbs were planted. The mosses have dried out now because they're above the water level (which is just at the base of the bulbs), but they kept their soft green color beautifully. In spring, they can be planted outdoors again, and should be fine if they're given some water until they get established again.

The paperwhites should be blooming in about two weeks, maybe sooner, but they're lovely even at this stage. There's a delicious anticipation about what's to come.

Pickling Your Paperwhites--an anonymous gardener's confession

My most tragic indoor gardening experience involved paperwhites--but it really wasn't their fault. The bulbs were planted in a sweet, over-sized, toile-patterned soup cup and saucer that I had fallen in love with (and envisioned eating soup from in the gloom of January) at a favorite shop near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, called Hot Cakes.

The bulbs were already started in the pretty soup cup. I brought them home, watered, and waited for beauty. I wasn’t disappointed. The paperwhites grew quickly, bloomed profusely, and perfumed the house throughout the holidays.

Though I didn’t notice right away, the paperwhites were getting taller. And taller. And taller still. Somewhere in the back of my mind, vague memories of the laws of physics tried to get my conscious attention, but to no avail: one day I came home to find my sweet, toile-patterned soup cup shattered on the floor, pea gravel and bulbs everywhere. The stems of the paperwhites had grown so tall that they overbalanced the soup cup and tipped it over. I was stricken! Not only was the lovely little cup broken beyond repair, but the paperwhites were a mass of wrecked foliage and flowers lying in a puddle of water on my wood floor.

I still have the pretty saucer. It reminds me of my first, and--until now--only foray into the pleasures and pitfalls of indoor bulbs. Tempted by our garden club’s fall bulb sale, and armed with some experience, I'm ready for another go. I’m starting the paperwhites myself this time and choosing a safer, albeit less whimsical, container. And I'm going to try something new.

I’m going to get the bulbs drunk! Pickled! Three sheets to the wind! Well, not really, but I am going to feed them alcohol. Not beer or a glass of wine (too much sugar). No, I’m going to give them something more like a White Lady (only leave out the Cointreau and the lemon juice, keep the gin).

If you think I’ve been smoking my paperwhites instead of planting them, check out this research from Cornell University’s Flower Bulb Research Program that explains how (recipe given) planting your paperwhites in alcohol can keep the ‘overbalancing act’ from spoiling your bulb show. And the great part is, it doesn’t alter the bloom size or blooming time of the bulbs. It just reduces the legginess of the stems.

You can stake and tie paperwhites, but wouldn’t it be fun to try something a little bit outside the box, er...clay pot? You can share the recipe with friends who ask how you managed to keep your paperwhites so compact and beautiful. But I don't think I'd plant them in a soup cup, no matter how cute it is.

Dried Flower Workshop on November 10

Just when it seems winter is not far off, a bit of color preserved from the summer garden promises to light up the dark of November. Clotilde Hryshko will present a dried flower arranging workshop at Pond Village Church in Brookfield, November 10, at 1:00 pm. The workshop is sponsored by Randolph Garden Club and is open to the public.

At the workshop, Clotilde will talk about the annual flowers that grow best in the Vermont climate that can be successfully dried for arrangements. She'll guide participants in creating a hanging swag dried flower arrangement to take home.

In late summer, Carol Rogers and Jackie Wilder gathered armfuls of beautiful flowers at Clotilde's organic farm, Camp Merrishko, to dry in preparation for this workshop. Other garden club members have been picking and drying flowers from their gardens all summer long in anticipation of this fun event.

But you really don't need to bring a thing for the workshop except a pair of clippers or sharp scissors for cutting the dried flowers. Everything else needed to create a beautiful hanging swag arrangement will be provided. There will be three colors of the papery, clover-like flowers of gomphrena, also called globe amaranth, plumes of wheat celosia, salvia, and ornamental grasses. Wire and background material for the hanging swag will also be provided. Just bring your clippers and plan to have fun!

Pre-registration is requested. Contact Jackie Wilder, 276-3959 for more information or to register.

Click to read more about Clotilde's farm-->

Lois Jackson's Botanical Drawing Workshop - A Great Learning Event

Children's book illustrator Susan Banta and retired educator Janice Dean discuss the challenges of accurately rendering a complex subject at the recent botanical drawing class presented by botanist and botanical artist Lois Jackson. Lois not only shared great drawing techniques but also practical tips gained through her many years as a botanical artist. She emphasized the importance of looking for the details in plant subjects that give life to a drawing. We learned about lighting, shading, and recognizing geometric shapes in the subject--as well as the kinds of materials budding botanical artists should outfit themselves with. Lois provided great drawing materials, allowed plenty of time to work hands-on, and shared individual feedback during the session. What a great class! Oh, and did I mention Carol Rogers (our very thoughtful president) arranged for yummy cookies and cider?! Those chocolate things with the coconut center--they were "to live for." I think that was Lois's phrase.

Botanical Drawing Workshop

Autumn is a fine time for capturing--at least on paper--the sometimes fleeting beauty of nature. Corinth botanist and botanical artist Lois Jackson leads an evening workshop on botanical drawing hosted by Randolph Garden Club, October 20, 6 - 9 pm, in the Gifford Hospital Maple Room. The public is invited.

Jackson uses traditional techniques of botanical and scientific illustration to bring the flowers, lichens, mushrooms, and seed-pods she loves, to life in watercolor, graphite, pen and ink and color pencil. Her portraits of anemones, lady’s slipper, trillium and other plants she finds on woodland walks or in the garden are not only beautiful, they are botanically accurate. Jackson’s work has appeared in numerous shows and exhibitions, and she is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. Prints and notecards of Jackson’s work will be available to purchase at the workshop.

Drawing plants and flowers starts with observation, according to Jackson. “You can look at a lot of things without truly seeing them,” she observes, “but you really see them when you draw them.” Skills learned in this class, such as identifying the geometric shapes in an object and using shading and comparative darkness in some areas, while retaining brightness of intensity in others, are essential for any kind of drawing. And when you gain experience with observing and capturing detail, you will see the beauty of nature around you in a whole new way.

Jackson will provide plants for sketching. For those who would like to bring their own, she suggests choosing plants with simple rather than complex forms. Jackson will also provide drawing materials, but attendees may bring their own if they wish.

Advance registration is requested, and there is a workshop/materials fee of $20. Please call Sam Florance, 728-7188, to register. Class limited to 12-15 participants.

Spring-Flowering & Christmas Bulb Sale 2009

View the bulbs
Bulbs are an easy and inexpensive way to beautify your yard and home for years to come. Thanks to everyone's hard work, the tour was a terrific event.

Highlights of the Gardens

Garden Notes
